Product Designer Wins Apprentice
Tom Pellereau became the winner of the 2011 Apprentice series last night, securing £250,000 worth of investment from Lord Alan Sugar for a new business venture. This is another high profile example of investment in new product design and the sea-change in apparent confidence in product design and innovation in helping to draw the country out of recession. One only has to observe the recent change on fortune of companies such as Jaguar / Land-rover to see how the export of British design and manufacture is having a huge effect on the British economy. As a nation, can we grow an economy that exists purely on services industries? Clearly the UK was built on design, engineering and innovation, and they are skills that must surely remain prevalent and valued for us to continue to compete in a global market! What do you think?

The above movie uses 3D Scanning and 3D Printing technologies to print out people’s movements in a dynamic and sculptural way. It employs the scanning technology used in new physical gaming on the X box 360, PS3 and Wii to generate the image for the print.
The movie below uses the gestural control of an iPad in the sculptuing process to create exciting new forms for a lighting design. Both highlight a very innovative use of existing technology in a new way.
Can you think of any existing technologies that could be employed in a new way? Let us know!

How will technology affect the way we live?
This movie is a great find from Michael Hamilton in the fourth form! Although it grieves me to admit, Microsoft provide a fascinating insight into the employment of information transfer in the not too distant future. I hope that you find it as interesting as I have, and looking at how design, technology and information technology meld to provide products, systems and processes that enhance areas of professional efficiency, education and social interaction.
Texas Instruments offer another movie that presents a day-in-the-life with new technology.
Let me know what you think!
How do you think new technology will change or enhance the way in which we live our lives in the near future?
Have you found any other suggestions or products that will have an impact?
